Being alive is so weird
— Jordan Berman, Significant Other

In January of 2019, I was invited to join Baruch College’s production of “Significant Other”, a student run show with a limited crew and not much beyond heart, ideas and a can-do attitude that drove the next few months of work. I began by reading the text, which was an incredible play by Josh Harmon, and I started to sketch logotypes. I wanted it to feel as frantic and unsure as it’s protagonist and the only way to get it right was by hand. I spent hours drawing logos, and trying to make something that felt unique. I had to find the feel of the show without yet knowing the cast, so for a few weeks I tried out different logos until I found the ones you see to the left.

After a lot of exploration, I decided on using balloons for the posters. The goal was to find something that is eye catching and simple. Without using images I wanted to convey the show’s message about feeling separate from the people around you and did it through color and blocking. The team loved the idea so I ran with it throughout the rest of the work.

Above you can see the final cast! We got so lucky with an amazing group of actors and I wanted to represent them in an unconventional way, so we assigned everybody a color and filtered their images though it. It helped give the headshots some life and feel at home with the rest of the colorful marketing for the show.
